Lumber & Plywood

Strength and durability are the top two reasons you would choose a specific type of lumber, but at O'Leary Building Centre we want you to like the look of what you build. Each wood has its own distinct grain and colour, and will be classified as either soft or hardwood.

Soft or Hard Lumber:

Type of Wood Trees Uses Tension & Shear
Softwood Pine, spruce, cedar, fir, larch, douglas fir, etc. Woodware, building homes/cabins and furniture  Strong in tension but weak in shear
Hardwood Mahogany, teak, walnut, oak, ash, elm, aspen, poplar, birch, maple, etc. Construction, furniture, flooring, and utensils Strong in compression, tension and shear
